How to Improve Rider's Position

In terms of having a good rider’s position, the alignment between shoulder, heel and butt should be so that you can hold up a stick and see that they’re all in line.

To be able to do this it’s really all about repetition and making sure that you’re strong enough to hold it. So just practice it a lot. When I work out I often focus on my core. It really helps me to have the strength and stamina so that I can hold the same position and sit very still without getting tired.

Another tip is to practice riding with lunging, without stirrups and reins. Like I said before, this requires that you’re actually strong enough to be able to do it, but when you’re forced to ride without stirrups and/or reins then you’re also forced to find your own balance by finding your center of gravity. So I think the best way to train your rider’s position is to not use stirrups.

This is something you really need to focus on, and I think there are a lot of rider’s who really need to train this, so just be aware of it. It’s one of those things that make a huge difference when you’re riding your programmes, so it’s really important to remember to train this. Sitting better is going to make you a better rider.

One of my biggest idols when it comes to really good rider's position is Charlotte Dujardin. She's so sensitive and it looks like she is almost not doing anything at all. She's really skilled in adjusting the horse without us even really noticing it.

My last tip for today is this spray that I use called Sporty Haft-Spray. It really helps me keep my legs very still while I'm riding because it's super super sticky. Some people have asked if it leaves marks on the saddle or anything. I haven't had any problems with that and I never wash it off after riding, so I really recommend it :)

Hope you liked these tips!

Jo bedre man sidder, jo bedre rytter bliver man.

  • Hi Catherine,
I was curious to know if you use the sticky spray also at home on a day to day basis or if you only use it on competitions?
Oh and thank for all these tips! :)
